Claim roadmapThe seven-step VA claim path.
A plain-English walkthrough of what usually happens, what to watch for, and what to do next. This is education, not a filing service or a promise about what the VA will decide.
1Gather Evidence
Collect the records, statements, and facts that show what happened, what changed, and how it affects daily life.
- Start with records you already have.
- Write down where missing records may live.
- Use statements for facts records do not show.
Next best step: List each condition and mark what evidence is already in hand.
2File the Claim
Submit the claim through VA.gov, mail, or with help from an accredited representative when you are ready.
- ClaimAnchor does not submit anything.
- A claim should match the facts you can support.
- Keep a copy of what you file.
Next best step: Confirm the claim type and the evidence packet before filing.
3VA Review
The VA receives the claim, asks for records, and decides whether more information or an exam is needed.
- Watch for letters and requests.
- Respond before deadlines.
- Keep notes on anything requested.
Next best step: Track any request as an evidence task.
4C&P Exam
A VA-arranged exam may document symptoms, severity, functional impact, and medical history for one or more conditions.
- Prepare facts, not scripts.
- Describe real limits clearly.
- Do not exaggerate or minimize symptoms.
Next best step: Use C&P Exam Prep before the appointment.
5Rating Decision
The VA grants, denies, defers, or assigns ratings and effective dates based on the record it reviewed.
- Read reasons and favorable findings.
- Check what evidence was considered.
- Note the decision date.
Next best step: Use the Decision Letter Guide before choosing a review path.
6Approved Benefits
If granted, review the rating, effective date, payment start, and whether any issue was left unresolved.
- Compare the decision to what you claimed.
- Save the letter.
- Keep evidence organized for future changes.
Next best step: Update My Progress so your workspace reflects the decision.
7Denied or Disagreed With
If you disagree, the next lane depends on the decision, evidence, deadlines, and whether new information exists.
- Do not guess the lane.
- Deadlines matter.
- Complex appeals deserve human review.
Next best step: Review the letter and ask for qualified help if the stakes are high.
